Myanmar’s transportation network comprises a combination of road, rail, air systems, though infrastructure development varies across regions. The quality and availability of services can differ significantly between urban centers and rural areas.
Air Transportation
Myanmar has a number of domestic airlines offering flights between major cities and tourist destinations. These include Myanmar National Airlines, Myanmar Aviation,Mann Yadanarpon Airlines,Myanmar Airway International
International Airports
Primary international gateways include Yangon International Airport (RGN) – main entry point for most international travelers, Mandalay International Airport (MDL), Naypyidaw International Airport (NYT). Air travel remains the fastest and most reliable option for covering long distances within the country. Checked baggage allowance on domestic flights = 20 kg,Carry-on baggage allowance = up to 7 kg
Upon arrival at some domestic airports (Ngapali-Thandwe/SNW, Lake Inle-Heho/HEH, etc.), it is necessary to go through internal migration control – a migration officer checks passports, visa (or visa stamp)
Road Transportation
Buses and Coaches: A wide range of intercity buses operate across Myanmar, connecting Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, Inle Lake, and other key destinations. Notable companies include JJ Express, Elite Express, and Mandalar Minn.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Taxis are widely available in major cities such as Yangon and Mandalay. Some ride-hailing apps (e.g., Grab) operate in Yangon and surrounding areas. Fares are generally negotiated in advance if no meter is used.
Private Vehicles: Car rentals are available in urban centers, but driving is not recommended for foreigners unfamiliar with local traffic laws or road conditions.
Note: Myanmar drives on the right side of the road, despite many cars being right-hand drive.
Railways: Myanmar Railways operates an extensive rail network connecting Yangon with Mandalay, Bagan, Pyin Oo Lwin, and other cities. While scenic, train travel is typically slow, subject to delays, and lacks modern amenities. Still, it may appeal to travelers seeking local experience.
Urban Transportation
Yangon: No metro system; transportation is primarily by taxis, buses, and shared pick-up trucks.
Yangon Bus Service (YBS): A modernized public bus system operates on hundreds of routes.
Motorbike Use: Prohibited within Yangon city limits but widely used elsewhere in Myanmar.
